There is nothing like the sound of your own breath to anchor you back into reality when you feel scattered. As the quality of your breath is directly linked to the quality of your life, awareness of the breath is the first step to improving all aspects of mind, body and spirit. When you shine the light of your awareness on your breath, it automatically becomes slower, deeper, smoother. Your mind follows the breath and the body follows the mind (see Stress Rx blog for a glimpse of how this works).
It is said in the Yoga tradition that you can hear a mantra on the sound of the breath. The words in sanskrit are SO HAM. I find the most helpful translation is I AM. The statement I AM has a timeless simplicity and leaves absolutely no holes for questions or doubts to creep in.
If you’ve got a 10 minute break in your work-day, hang your do-not-disturb sign on your cubicle, put on your earphones and place incoming calls on hold.
